Cardiff University Partner Clubs

Cardiff University have strong playing links with Four WRU clubs. Each club plays at a varying level and so are relevant to all students’ playing abilities. All three clubs were chosen with knowledge of the coaches and their relevant standards. Students are restricted to a maximum of 12 games while studying at Cardiff University where it is beneficial to represent one of the three recommended clubs.

Selection Criteria: Invitation only, on recommendation of head of Rugby.

Cardiff RFC Statement:

Cardiff’s Director of Rugby Justin Burnell has hailed the new club’s partnership with Cardiff University for future seasons as a vital element of both clubs’ long-term development. Burnell said ‘we have built up a strong link with the University which will benefit both partners in our attempt to be a force in the Welsh premiership and the University’s attempt to make a big statement in BUSA rugby’.

Cardiff University Rugby Team

Cardiff Students: Ryan Price - Chris Stamatakis - Mathew Amos - Aaron Fowler - Iain Dick - World Cup 7's Winner Tom Isaacs - Wales & British Lion Jamie Roberts, all in action for Cardiff RFC

Cardiff’s Team Manager Gafyn Cooper said it’s vitally important that players who come to Cardiff University to study know that there are great opportunities to progress their rugby careers as well as their academic education. Cooper was keen to point out that many former Cardiff University students such as Ryan Price, Matt Amos, Chris Stamatakis, Damien Welch and Elgan Jones received an excellent rugby grounding at the University under the guidance of Director of Rugby Martyn Fowler. This is also the case for the current crop of players such as Aaron Fowler and Tom Isaacs who continue to represent the university and rugby club.

We look forward to taking this partnership on next year; player placements will be made available for suitable players on the recommendation of Martyn. We look forward to seeing the next generation of Cardiff University students playing at the club.
